Supervisory responsibilities are assigned based on the unique needs of the position and hiring department/org, and are recorded in the Position Management application within Self-Service. Access to specific HR systems is automatically granted based on this designation of supervisory responsibilities.

Administrative supervisor: Has the authority and ability to exercise independent judgment in regard to the supervision of their employees, to include the authority to hire, evaluate, discipline and terminate, or to effectively recommend such actions. The administrative supervisor is the primary supervisor in relation to a functional supervisor; and typically is the primary supervisor in relation to a secondary administrative supervisor. Administrative supervision typically is designated on an organization chart with a solid line between the supervisor and the employee(s) they supervise.

Functional supervisor: Typically has limited responsibilities related to the assignment and distribution of work, such as training, scheduling, task assignments, and monitoring work.  A functional supervisor may be asked for input regarding performance evaluations, but typically they are not responsible for formally evaluating employees. Functional supervision typically is  designated on an organization chart with a dotted line between the supervisor and the employee(s) they supervise.

Secondary supervisor: May be either an administrative or functional supervisor.  This designation allows for a dual reporting relationship to be indicated for either functional or administrative supervision, depending on the specific needs of the position. When a secondary supervisor is designated, the supervisors should clarify roles and responsibilities for the employee(s) reporting to them.
