Consensual Relationship Involving Students

Management Mechanism Template

Consensual Relationships Policy

A neutral supervisor* must develop a plan for management of the Instructional Context.  The relevant supervisor will normally be the person overseeing the teaching activity (e.g., the DEO of the academic department that offers the affected instructional activity).  The goal of the plan would be to end the evaluative, supervisory, and where possible, the instructional functions causing the conflict of interest.

All plans need to be routed as follows for approval:

  • In those cases where the Instructor is a faculty member, the plan is forwarded to the Dean and the Office of the Provost.
  • In those cases where the Instructor is a staff member, the plan is forwarded to the Dean, with a copy to the Senior Human Resources Leadership Representative and University Human Resources.
  • In those cases where the Instructor is a graduate assistant, the plan is forwarded to the Dean, with a copy to the Graduate College and the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.
  • The elements listed below need to be included in all management plans that are submitted for review.
  • Identification of relevant individuals.  Include names and job title/status.
  • Identification of unit or department and division or college in which the instructional context occurs.
  • A description of the measures established to end the evaluative, supervisory, and/or instructional functions (include names and titles) causing the conflict of interest.  Assurance that the departmental executive officer will provide a written report no later than one year following the approval date of the management plan regarding the effectiveness of that plan.**  The report will be routed as follows:
    • In those cases where the Instructor is a faculty member, the report is forwarded to the Dean and the Office of the Provost.
    • In those cases where the Instructor is a staff member, the report is forwarded to the Dean, with a copy to the Senior Human Resources Leadership Representative and University Human Resources.
    • In those cases where the Instructor is a graduate assistant, the report is forwarded to the Dean, with a copy to the Graduate College and the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.

* Neutral supervisor - a person superior to the Instructor involved in the consensual relationship who would otherwise have the responsibility to make, or participate actively in the making of, any decisions or recommendations relating to the employment status of the related individual.

**Written Reports - In certain cases, such reports may be requested at six months as well as one year following the approval date.
