Laura Corbett, Nurse Manager and Wellness Ambassador for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at University of Iowa Health Care, collaborated with staff nurse Elizabeth May to organize a step challenge among the entire NICU team. The four-week NIC2 Step Challenge encouraged team members to take group walks during breaks and stay active away from work.
Fifty-eight participants worked to achieve a minimum number of steps each day. If participants reached the daily step goal, they could submit a photo of their fitness tracker or device to receive a ticket for a raffle. The raffle's winner received half of the buy-in money, while the other half supported the NIC2 Nursing Unit Council and Social Committee.
Laura explains, “The challenge has brought daily laughter, fierce competition, hilarious stories, and an overall incredible sense of togetherness, not only for our team but also for our families.” She plans to continue coordinating this fun event every year moving forward.
