Regular faculty and staff with at least a 50 percent appointment and eligible dependents can enroll in this medical plan. Retirees are also eligible.

UISelect is designed for employees who live in Iowa and value high-quality coverage but want more of a say over their spending to meet financial needs. Members will pay lower monthly premiums than UIChoice, and as they use their coverage, they will pay a higher out-of-pocket cost for medical services.

UISelect Plan Documents

The coverage manual is a comprehensive document that sets forth the rights of the plan's participants and beneficiaries and guides the university in making decisions and executing our responsibilities.

Highlights

  • You must live in Iowa to enroll in this plan.
  • Lower premiums but higher out-of-pocket costs when the plan is used.
  • Only Level 1 and 2 providers are covered, meaning the plan only covers medical providers in Iowa.
  • Coverage outside of Iowa is not covered except in emergencies or with Doctor on Demand.
Dependent children attending college, long-term travelers, and families living apart may be covered through guest membership.

Costs

The university covers the total cost of employee-only and double spouse family coverage for the UISelect health plan premiums and 80% of the coverage cost for the other family status options: employee and spouse, employee and child(ren), and employee and family.

Medical providers

Health care under the UISelect plan is available through Level 1 and Level 2 providers. Level 1 and Level 2 providers include only hospitals and clinics in the state of Iowa. Please note that you do not need to pick a plan level before receiving care at a provider; however, the lower the provider level, the lower the cost for UISelect members.

UISelect does not offer Level 3 providers, except in emergencies or with a guest membership. Level 3 providers cover hospitals and clinics outside the state of Iowa.

Level 3 exceptions Include:

  • Dependent child(ren) attending college (guest membership)
  • Long-term travelers (guest membership)
  • Families living apart as well as individuals in similar situations (guest membership)
  • If service is not available in Iowa. Exceptions will be covered at Level 2.

Virtual health care is available for free to UISelect members from any location via Doctor on Demand.

Pharmacy

For prescription drugs, UISelect has a tiered prescription benefit formulary called Blue Rx Value Plus. The lower the tier of your prescription drug, the lower the cost to you.
