The University of Iowa is concerned about the potential threat the high cost of health and dental care may pose to students' financial well-being. For this reason, the university offers cost-effective, comprehensive plans for all eligible University of Iowa students.

Health Insurance Plans Offered

Both of our student health insurance plans are administered by Wellmark Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Iowa. Any student may sign up for the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP), but only Health Science majors and graduates may enroll in UIGRADCare. Please review the student insurance eligibility in the next section before you plan to enroll. 

SHIP

The student health insurance plan (SHIP) is a high-quality student medical plan with coverage in and outside Iowa. 

Eligible Student Groups:

  • Any student who meets the required student insurance eligibility rules

UIGRADCare

The UIGRADCare plan is a comprehensive health program from providers within the UI Health Care network and/or Student Health. 

Eligible Student groups:

  • Health Science Students
  • Graduate Students

Are you eligible? 

For a student to be eligible to enroll in the university health insurance:

  1. they MUST be a degree-seeking student AND
  2. be registered for 5 or more credit hours each semester (undergrad students only). 
Please note that ALL undergrad and international students MUST have health insurance, either their own plan through another carrier that meets the minimum requirements or enroll in one of the UI student plans. 

Know Your Terms

As you read about your coverage, review the terms below that will help you make sense of unfamiliar words and phrases. 

Copay

Flat fee owed at the time you use a covered service.

Premium

Your membership fee. It's what you pay to be covered by your health insurance.

Coinsurance

Percent billed to you after you use a covered service, or can be collected at the time of service.

Out-of-Pocket Maximum (OPM)

Most you'll pay each year for covered services.

Deductible

The dollar amount you pay up front before the plan starts to pay for covered services.
