The Executive Leadership Academy (ELA) – Higher Education is a comprehensive and immersive program that prepares UI leaders to meet the organizational goals of the University of Iowa now and into the future.  Program elements include Immersions, Individual Coaching, Leadership Labs, and Mentorship.

Immersions

Each immersion is designed to provide participants with a balanced theoretical and practitioner approach to leadership. There will be five immersions designed around the framework of the Leadership Challenge (Kouzes and Posner) and the 5 Behaviors of Exemplary Leadership:

  • Model the Way
  • Inspire a Shared Vision
  • Challenge the Process
  • Enable Others to Act
  • Encourage the Heart

Each immersion includes expert speakers, interactive activities, team-based Leadership Labs, collaboration and time for networking. A variety of tools and assessments will be used to enhance participant growth and development.

Leadership Labs & Final Presentations

Leadership Labs provide participants with an opportunity to experiment, problem solve and practice leadership skills while working on University of Iowa challenges as identified by university leadership. Participants will work together in teams to gain awareness and understanding of a current or projected University of Iowa challenge and will present potential solutions during the closing session.

Individual Coaching

Each participant receives four individual, one-on-one sessions with an experienced leadership coach. Discussions focus on developing and strengthening individual leadership knowledge, attitude and skills. Sessions can be held virtually or face to face depending on the schedules and preferences of the coaches and participants. Participants will use these sessions to develop their unique Individual Leadership Development Plan (ILDP).

Mentorship

During the first immersion participants will be introduced to mentor best practices. Participants will be paired with mentors and encouraged to meet at least four times throughout the program. Mentoring is a powerful and personal career development tool which supports professional growth, gives back to the UI community, and enhances the academy experience.
