Hi everyone! It’s Erica Blaha, liveWELL Health Coach. I'm back with another MoveWELL quarterly message.
We’re entering cozy season. My favorite.
Warm blankets, puppy snuggles, hot chocolate, football all weekend and maybe a few more nights spent inside. When temperatures drop, even my dog sometimes prefers trading evening walks for the comfort of a blanket. It’s easy to see why staying active can feel harder this time of year. The key is finding ways to move that fit the season you’re in.
Adjust with the Seasons
Our routines naturally shift throughout the year, and that’s okay. Movement doesn’t have to look the same every season. Think of it as seasonal movement. Each season brings its own rhythm (and drastic temperatures). Warmer months are perfect for hikes, bike rides, or pickleball, while cooler months might be better for indoor strength training, stretching, or an at-home circuit. Therefore, our goals sometimes need to shift with the season based on what feels enjoyable right now.
As soon as I see my weather app start using blue tones for the temperature, I know it's time to re-evaluate my plan. Here are some things you can consider this season.
Take It Inside
When it’s too cold or dark to be outside, you may want to take your exercise indoors. You could join a gym, explore free workout videos online, or create a quick home circuit with jumping jacks, push-ups, or other favorite movements. Even mall hallways can double as walking tracks when the weather is rough.
Here are a few guided options in the Physical Activity Resource Library:
Think Beyond Exercise
Not all movement has to be structured workouts. Everyday activity counts and can be surprisingly impactful. Cleaning, organizing, redecorating, or dancing can be a playful way to stay active. Even short stretching breaks throughout the day help get you up and moving.
Layer Up
Cooler weather doesn’t always mean you have to move indoors. Find new activities that only come around once a year, like ice skating or taking a winter hike. It might just take a few more layers and hand warmers to make it happen!
Take a Quick Check-In
Think about what feels realistic for you this season.
- What kind of movement do you enjoy in this weather?
- When could you fit in 10 to 15 minutes of activity during your day?
- What small change could make it easier to get started?
