Research Internships are designed for individuals who seek training, experience, and mentorship in a research setting, plan to pursue a graduate or professional degree in science, medicine, or a related field, and have U.S. citizenship or permanent residency.
The internship enables them to work in the lab of a distinguished principal investigator at a major national research institution, providing invaluable experience and preparation for the commencement of advanced studies. The appointment is for a limited term.

Health and Dental Insurance
Post-baccalaureate interns may enroll only in UIGRADCare, the Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP), and Student Dental.
University Benefits will send a packet of materials to your UIowa email address when the appointment begins. This will include rates, information, and an enrollment form to complete and return. Information on the plans can be reviewed at the links above.
Mandatory Retirement Plan
Research Interns must participate in a mandatory retirement plan through IPERS or TIAA. The retirement plan election is a one-time opportunity and is irrevocable.
The employee has 60 calendar days from the date of hire to make their election. If the employee does not make an election, they will default into the Iowa Public Employees' Retirement System (IPERS). The only exceptions to those who will not default into IPERS are interns who are neither U.S. citizens nor lawful permanent residents. They will participate in TIAA.
This retirement contribution will automatically be deducted from the employee's monthly paycheck on a pre-tax basis.
If the employee prefers to participate in the TIAA retirement plan, they can log in to Employee Self-Service (Benefits & Wellness >> Retirement Enrollment) and make their active election.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Any Research Intern with taxable income may participate in the health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts. For more information on the FSA program, along with the enrollment process, visit the Flexible Spending Account page.
Paid Leave
Research Interns are entitled to annual paid leave of 15 working days, but do not accrue vacation and are not entitled to vacation pay. The appointing department is responsible for arranging and accounting of leave for these individuals.
Disability and Workers' Compensation
Research Interns are covered by Workers' Compensation.
Access to University Facilities and Activities
Research Interns will receive a University identification card. This card provides access to library and information resources, cultural and athletic events, and the ability to charge items to a University billing account.
