Some conflicts are not appropriate to handle without support. In these cases, it is important to seek assistance and guidance.
First: Assess the Situation
- Contact the appropriate authorities if there is a risk of physical harm to someone.
- Determine if you need to share you are a mandatory reporter.
- Acts of harassment, intimidation, and harm require supervisors and HR staff to communicate these occurrences to the proper authorities. There are also occasions required by law or court order where you will need to disclose information.
- Your main role is to listen and support. Communicating clear privacy expectations is fair and allows the person communicating with you to decide what they feel comfortable in sharing.

Seek out applicable additional resources
- Office of the Ombudsperson
Provides informal conflict resolution, mediation services, and advocacy for fair treatment and processes for anyone with a university related concern including faculty, staff, and students. - Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
Offers confidential, short-term counseling and referral services at no cost to UI faculty, staff, postdocs, medical residents, their spouses/partners, and insurance-eligible dependents living in Iowa. - Women's Resource and Action Center (WRAC)
Provides confidential, one-on-one support for concerns related to discrimination, harassment, violence, or other issues. - Domestic Violence Intervention Program/Rape Victim Advocacy Program and (DVIP/RVAP)
Offers comprehensive support and advocacy with a focus on safety, empowerment, dignity, and hope for victim-survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, dating violence, stalking, and human trafficking. - University Counseling Service (UCS)
Supports mental well-being and helps undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as postdocs, in achieving success at IOWA.
