Lowell has a master's degree in social work from Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He is a licensed independent social worker and a certified international alcohol and drug counselor.

Lowell has provided counseling/therapy services to varying populations for more than 30 years. In addition to his role as a supervisor/clinical coordinator for psychiatry services, he works closely with health care professionals who have struggled with brain health issues.

He facilitates a group therapy program for physicians in the Iowa Physician Health Program and provides both individual and couples therapy.

Lowell enjoys taking care of calves, chickens, quail, and guineas on his small hobby farm in rural Iowa.
