Health and Dental Insurance
Student Health Insurance
Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
- Any student may enroll in this health plan.
- SHIP is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa plan that provides coverage in and outside of Iowa.
- Services covered under SHIP: preventive care, hospitalization, surgery, maternity care, well-baby and well-child care, emergency care for accidents or illnesses, medically necessary physician care, prescription drugs, and mental health services.
- Covered providers under SHIP are in the Alliance Select PPO network. You may see whoever you wish; however, choosing care with a participating provider will result in lower out-of-pocket costs.
UIGRADCare plan
- Undergraduate students are not eligible to enroll in this plan.
- UIGRADCare is a Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Iowa plan that covers students and their eligible dependents from providers only within the UI Health Care Network and Student Health.
- Covers hospital, medical, surgical, outpatient, and other health care services such as physical therapy. The out-of-pocket maximum for UI Health Care is $1,000 for individuals and $1,700 for families. No deductible, $10 copay for office or clinic visits at UI Health Care providers, no charge for preventive care and immunizations, 10% coinsurance for blood work and imaging. No referrals for specialist care.
Student Dental Insurance
- The Student Dental Insurance Plan is available to all students.
- The Student Dental Plan has a 3-tier Delta Dental of Iowa provider network. The covered student may see any provider they wish. However, there are advantages to using participating providers who have contracts with Delta Dental of Iowa.
- Covered services include check-ups and teeth cleanings, cavity repair and tooth extractions, endodontic services (Root canals), periodontal services (gum and bone diseases), High-cost restorations (crowns, inlays), and more.
- Students and their eligible dependents who are enrolled in Delta Dental of Iowa will have access to a vision discount program through EyeMed Vision Care at no additional cost.

Who is eligible to enroll in student insurance?
An eligible student must:
- Be a degree-seeking student AND
- Be registered for five or more credit hours each semester - applies to undergraduate students only.
All health science and international students must have insurance.
Eligible Dependents:
Students may add a spouse, domestic partner*, or children to their coverage, if applicable.
Adding or removing dependents: A student may enroll or make changes to their coverage during the student insurance open enrollment periods throughout the year or, if outside the open enrollment period, with a qualifying event.
*Domestic partners - To cover a domestic partner, you must file an Affidavit for Domestic Partnership - students form.
How to Enroll in Student Insurance
Open Enrollment Periods
Enroll or submit proof of coverage during the following open enrollment periods or with a qualifying event in MyUI.
- Fall Semester - August 01 - September 09
- Spring Semester - January 01 - February 09
- Summer Semester - May 01 - June 09
Proof of Coverage
All international and health science students must submit a proof of coverage form if they are already covered under another health insurance policy (e.g., parent, legal guardian, or spouse) and do not want to enroll in UI student insurance. The student should complete the Proof of Coverage form in MyUI.
How to Enroll
Students will complete their enrollment, submit proof of coverage, or make changes to their student insurance enrollment through MyUI.

Making Changes
Benefit changes must occur during one of the three student open enrollment periods or following a qualifying event. If a qualifying event happens outside these periods, you can request a corresponding benefit change within 30 days of the event.
