Iowa Lions Eye Bank (ILEB), part of the UI Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences, is the only eye bank in the state of Iowa and supports all 99 counties.
Founded in 1955 by then-department chair Dr. Alson Braley with support from the Lions Clubs of Iowa, ILEB has been an innovative leader in the field of eye-banking since its inception, helping corneal surgeons preserve and restore people's vision through corneal transplantation.
ILEB visitors are invited to learn how eye bank staff recover, evaluate, process, and distribute ocular tissue donated by generous individuals for use in corneal transplantation, research, and education at the University of Iowa and throughout the world. Guests will also learn how Iowa Lions Eye Bank honors donors and their loved ones for the gift of sight, provides outreach and education to the public, and engages in cutting-edge research to revolutionize our understanding and treatment of eye disease and improve eye banking practices.
Please note: Because visitors will tour ILEB's laboratory areas, for regulatory and safety purposes, visitors are required to wear closed shoes and have no exposed skin on the shoulders or below the waist. However, if individuals forget, we will provide scrubs and foot covers for visitors to wear for the duration of the tour.
