Sponsor
Provides oversight of the change, fostering leadership support with peers and other managers. Selects the project manager, remains actively engaged throughout the process, and communicates business messages about the change with employees.
Project Manager
Collaborates with a cross-functional team of experts to design and execute the change. Provides timely, accurate, succinct information about the change and the project. Addresses resistance. Develops a comprehensive, step-by-step plan to ensure successful implementation and adoption of the change.
Subject Matter Experts
Offer valuable insights, expertise, and feedback to inform the change process. Their specialized knowledge helps guide decision-making, ensures the change is grounded and relevant, and engages employees.
People Managers
Guide their teams through the change process by providing support, addressing concerns, and maintaining open communication. Act as connectors between the project team and staff, while promoting the change and fostering employee adaptation.
Employees
Play an active role in implementing and adjusting to the change. They can become advocates for the change by seeking information, offering feedback, and managing their personal transition through the change.
Roles in a Smaller-Scale Change Initiative
Not all change initiatives require a full team. In smaller-scale changes, there may only be a Sponsor and a Project Manager, with employees playing a more direct role in implementation. In these cases:
- The Sponsor may take on additional responsibilities, such as directly communicating with employees and addressing resistance.
- The Project Manager may collaborate more closely with employees to ensure smooth execution and adoption.
- Employees remain essential as change adopters and may contribute valuable feedback throughout the process.
Even in smaller efforts, clear communication and leadership support are key to success.
