Adjunct Faculty Transactions
Complimentary Status
An Adjunct Faculty Complimentary Appointment Form must be initiated first to create a 0% appointment. This appointment can be for up to three years and reviewed for renewal at any time at the discretion of the department.
Adjunct Support Form
Once appointed at 0% in the Adjunct Complimentary position, the individual can then be put into paid status by initiating an Adjunct Support Form. Once the adjunct record has been moved into paid status, the Adjunct Support form cannot be used again on that record during the same time period.
Adjunct appointments are always temporary, part-time, and do not include benefits. These appointments must be less than 50% effort across all adjunct jobs. Please see W-4 information for tax withholding implications of extra compensation payments.
Reappointment
At the end of the Complimentary appointment term, the faculty member and the position should be reviewed. If desired, reappointment for another term of up to three years can be made by processing a Change in Status - Faculty Status Change form.
The form and attachments will route for approval in Workflow to the department, Dean’s Office, and the Office of the Provost.
Paid & Unpaid Status
The Adjunct Complimentary position begins the employee in an unpaid status at 0% effort. The Adjunct Support form transfers the employee into paid status as of the effective date used on the form.
The Adjunct position will automatically revert the job record back to an unpaid, complimentary position as of the end date provided on the form for the paid Adjunct appointment. No termination form is required.
Pay Schedule and Paygroups
The possible paygroups available for an Adjunct are:
Appointment Type | Paygroup | Payment Schedule | Note |

Spring/Second Semester | B | Paid in 5 monthly installments February 1 – June 1 | |

Once an Adjunct job record has been transferred into paid status, another Adjunct Support form cannot be used again for the same period of time.

Impact
- To prevent delayed or inaccurate payments, Adjunct Support forms should be complete through the Workflow system prior to payroll cutoff in the month the change occurs (5 business days before the end of the month)
- Using incorrect service dates or submitting a termination form for an Adjunct, can impact computer databases and programs access
- Access to buildings, laboratories, parking lots, system access, and other assigned accesses (if no other appointment)
- Compliance – per State of Iowa code, adjuncts are not to exceed 50% effort
