The University of Iowa has been recognized as a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Patriot Employer for its commitment to hiring military Veterans.
This recognition comes in addition to the institution's status as a Home Base Iowa employer and its SkillBridge partnership.
Iowa currently employs more than 500 self-identified Veterans and saw a 47% increase in Veteran hiring in 2024 compared to 2023. In all, the UI is home to more than 2,200 Veterans, current service members, military spouses, and children.
"Designations like the DAV Patriot Employer and our partnership with SkillBridge help support the university's goals around hiring Veterans," says Adam Potter, a retired Army Veteran and senior human resources specialist, who has helped lead Veteran recruitment efforts on campus.
Disabled American Veterans is a non-profit organization that provides free, professional assistance to Veterans and their families in obtaining benefits and services from the Department of Veterans Affairs; represents the interests of disabled Veterans on Capitol Hill; and more.
The UI was among the employers considered for the DAV Employer of the Year award thanks to its Veteran recruitment, hiring success, recognition efforts, and community involvement.
"This designation reflects our commitment to supporting Veterans and their families through meaningful employment opportunities," says Cheryl Reardon, chief human resources officer and associate vice president. "Veterans bring invaluable skills and perspectives to our community, and we're dedicated to fostering an environment where they can thrive."
