UIChoice is a high-quality plan with extensive coverage inside and outside of Iowa. Monthly premiums for UIChoice are higher than UISelect, and out-of-pocket medical service costs are lower.

The coverage manual is a comprehensive document that sets forth the plan participants' and beneficiaries' rights and guides the university in making decisions and executing our responsibilities.

Highlights

  • High-quality coverage with higher monthly premiums than UISelect and lower out-of-pocket costs.
  • It covers providers nationwide. How much you pay depends on the provider's benefit level.
  • Medical services are covered outside Iowa, and costs are lower with in-network

Costs

The University covers 80% of the premium cost for employee + spouse, employee + children, and family coverage. Employee-only and double-spouse family coverage are discounted even further.

Medical providers

You may obtain health care from any provider you wish. However, how much you pay for care will depend on the provider's benefit level.

UIChoice has three provider levels. You do not need to pick a plan level. The level of the provider you choose for care automatically determines how much you pay—the lower the level, the lower the cost.

Virtual health care is free to UIChoice members and their covered dependents from any location via Doctor on Demand.

Please be advised that not all medical providers in Iowa participate with Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Employees are encouraged to verify the participation status of their healthcare providers with Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Customer Service (phone number on the back of your member ID card) before scheduling appointments or receiving services.

Pharmacy

The UIChoice plan has a 4-tiered prescription drug benefit. The lower the tier of your drug, the lower the cost to you.
