Description of Leave Programs

Vacation Leave

The University of Iowa offers a generous vacation leave program for eligible employees, allowing them to accrue vacation days based on their job category and years of service. Employees can accumulate vacation leave up to twice their annual entitlement, and every effort is made to schedule sufficient vacation to prevent loss of accrued leave.

Sick Leave

The University of Iowa's sick leave program allows eligible employees to accrue 12 hours of sick leave per month for full-time service, which can be used for personal illness, medical appointments, family caregiving, and other medically related absences. Part-time employees accrue sick leave in proportion to their work hours, and sick leave credits do not accrue during unpaid absences.

Family Caregiving Leave

The University of Iowa's Family Caregiving Leave program enables eligible employees to utilize up to 40 hours of accrued sick leave annually to care for ill or injured family members. This leave can be carried over from one year to the next, enabling employees to support their loved ones during medical appointments and recovery periods.

Catastrophic Leave

The University of Iowa's Catastrophic Leave Program assists eligible faculty and staff who have exhausted all paid leave due to a catastrophic illness or injury affecting themselves or an immediate family member. Employees can receive donated vacation leave from colleagues to remain in paid status during extended absences, ensuring financial stability during challenging times.

Leave of Absence (LOA)

The University of Iowa's Leave of Absence (LOA) program enables employees to take time off from their job for various reasons, including personal, medical, or professional development purposes. Leaves can be paid or unpaid, and are granted in continuous increments of up to one year. Employees must coordinate with their supervisor and HR representative to authorize the leave, and benefits may be affected depending on the duration and type of leave.
