Want to see how a driving simulator really works? Eager to visit Hancher Auditorium or explore one of Iowa’s outdoor treasures, Macbride Nature Area?

University of Iowa staff and faculty can do all this and more during Discover Your University events April 13, May 17, and June 20.

Tours, talks, and demonstrations offer inside looks at university facilities, collections, research programs, and other campus gems. These experiences provide unique opportunities to explore what makes Iowa an asset for the state, nation, and world.

“Wherever we work or whatever we do at the university, we’re part of something special,” says Cheryl Reardon, chief human resources officer and associate vice president. “We want to help employees learn about all of the great aspects of our university community."

Discover Your University launched with a pilot program in fall 2022. Nearly 300 employees took part, and 91% of respondents to post-event surveys said the experience strengthened their sense of connection to the university. Some 93% said it enhanced their awareness of diverse experiences and perspectives at the UI.

Team-building opportunities

This year, Discover Your University organizers want to expand the range of visit sites, make it easier for faculty and Merit staff to participate, and encourage more workgroups to treat events as team-building opportunities.

James Jorris, a revenue cycling coordinator at UI Health Care Patient Financial Services, organized his team for a visit to the Athletics Hall of Fame last year. The team usually works remotely, so the event carried extra meaning.

“Well after, we were still talking about how great it was to see each other,” says Jorris, who’s also vice president and president elect for Staff Council. “We also got to learn about the university and take pride in who we work for.”

Engagement, well-being, and public awareness

UI staff and faculty can participate in up to two Discover Your University events each year. Schedules, event descriptions, and registration information are posted on the program’s website.

All events take place during the regular workday, and employees can take part without using leave time, in keeping with the university’s educational opportunities policy. Participants also earn liveWELL points for the experience.

The emphasis on workplace engagement, employee well-being, and inclusion support strategic priorities for the university. The program also helps build public awareness.

“Employees are the best ambassadors for the university and its programs,” Reardon says. “The more they experience first-hand, the better prepared they are to tell neighbors, friends, and family about what our students, faculty, staff, and community partners are achieving.”

University departments and programs interested in hosting Discover Your University events can contact UHR Lead Teresa Kulper. Fall 2023 visit days will be announced this summer.
