Hello, Leader.

As crisp cooler air moves in and the scent from early morning tailgates mixes with the coziness of sweater weather, we’re reminded of the importance of transitions and new opportunities. This month brings with it more chances for leadership development opportunities, funding your strategic initiatives, and different ways to think about overcoming self-induced obstacles as a leader. Stay engaged, stay inspired, and let’s continue driving impactful change together.

UI LEAD

UI Leadership, Education, Assessment, and Development (UI LEAD) is a comprehensive leadership program contributing to both the growth of participants’ career goals and expansion of their effectiveness as emerging leaders.

Early each year, a call is put out to campus-wide senior human resources leadership for nominations of emerging or mid-level staff and faculty within their departments. The program runs during the summer each year, and includes coaching, assessments, and sessions offering chances to learn and reflect. Be sure to let your supervisor and/or Senior HR Rep know of your interest in participating.

Hear how UI LEAD specifically impacted the growth of three members from the Department of Internal Medicine in this article in Making the Rounds. The story includes insights from both the participants as well as the directors who nominated them for the program and witnessed the impact it had.

Well-Being at Iowa

Finding well-being resources on campus and in the community is now easier than ever on the new Well-Being at Iowa site. Did you know that Gallup found that managers are 39% more likely to be engaged when they work under highly engaged leadership teams? And when managers are engaged, their employees are even more likely to follow suit. Engagement and well-being go hand in hand—they influence each other and together create a powerful combination (State of the Global Workplace: 2024 Report,© Gallup Inc.). When well-being is high, it amplifies the benefits of engagement, helping employees perform at their best. Members of the Strategic Plan Action and Resource Committee will answer questions and provide best practices on constructing a competitive preliminary proposal for P3 funding.

Women's Faculty Development Conference: Save the Date!

Faculty are invited to the 17th annual Women’s Faculty Development ConferenceBoth/And Thinking: Embracing Creative Tensions, on Friday, Feb. 21, 2025, at the Iowa Memorial Union. The conference will feature an interactive workshop with Marianne Lewis, Dean of the Carl H. Lindner College of Business at the University of Cincinnati, and co-author of Both/And Thinking.

Coaches Corner

Overcoming self-induced obstacles is key to unlocking leadership potential. Limiting beliefs and self-doubt can hold leaders back. These barriers often show up as procrastination, perfectionism, or fear of failure.

Here’s how to break through:

  • Identify the barriers: Acknowledge self-limiting beliefs—they lose power once recognized.
  • Set incremental goals: Small, achievable steps build confidence and momentum.
  • Self-reflect and seek feedback: Regular check-ins on progress highlight growth and areas to improve.
  • Incorporate mindfulness: Managing stress reduces the grip of self-doubt.

By addressing these internal challenges, leaders can elevate their performance and impact.
