The University of Iowa provides a centralized animal care program through the Office of Animal Resources (OAR), which reports to the Vice President for Research. The program includes animal housing facilities in the Carver College of Medicine, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and College of Public Health, with other affiliated sites.

The Office of Animal Resources provides expertise, care, and resources necessary for the maintenance of research animals. Our department's mission is preservation of the university's animal research privilege and maintenance of a quality animal care and use program.

OAR staff members are critical in ensuring controlled animal husbandry conditions and high-quality veterinary care, an important feature in generating research results that can have a worldwide impact in the biomedical field.

Visitors will tour animal facilities on the west campus. This will provide them an opportunity to observe how OAR houses and cares for animals utilized in research projects. Participants will be exposed to a variety of animal species, housing systems, facility design/finishes, and routine care of animals.
